In partnership with Grand Union, Bruntwood is offering the opportunity for two artists to work in residence at a specially designed coworking space at Cornwall Buildings in Birmingham. Beginning in January 2019, the residency will last for 12 months and artists will benefit from 24-hour access to this free, shared workspace and mentoring from Grand Union’s Curatorial team.

Grand Union is committed to supporting and advocating artistic practice in Birmingham and wider social contexts, providing access to spaces for innovative artistic and curatorial practice.

As a group, Bruntwood has a long term commitment to creating thriving cities, and recognises that both arts and culture are key components to a city’s quality of life, as well as being powerful economic drivers.

Together, we believe that a strong artistic community is an essential part of an integrated city. As Birmingham approaches an unprecedented surge in growth, it is vital that the city’s arts and culture scene continues to be supported, as well as developing the city’s home grown talent.

The scheme offers the opportunity for artists who would be interested in working in residence within the frame and environment of another organisation based within the city centre.

Taking residency in Cornwall Buildings, the artists will also become part of the Bruntwood Community, with invites to a range of activities from wellbeing to social to business insight events, as well as Grand Union social and studio events.

Grand Union will provide support by working with artists, curators and writers, placing an emphasis on commissioning new art, supporting career development and encouraging experimentation.

Artists work will be promoted through an ambitious programme of exhibitions, talks and events in the Grand Union gallery and in spaces across the city. The Grand Union team will also offer the chance to develop artists curatorial talent through a programme of employment, mentoring and toolkits

Bruntwood and Grand Union will work together to select the two artists they feel would benefit most from the opportunity. Simon Bushell, Arts Co-ordinator at Bruntwood commented: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Grand Union on this truly exciting opportunity. Celebrating art and creating spaces which inspire and enliven communities is an important aspect of Bruntwood’s vision.”

“This is a fantastic platform for two talented artists to create dynamic pieces of art that will enliven and transform our Bruntwood buildings, the community and Birmingham’s thriving cultural offering.”
